Michigan's victory over Navy was the worst defeat in the history of the Naval Academy's football program. On offense, senior running back Rob Lytle was selected as the team's most valuable player, finished third in voting for the Heisman Trophy.

On defense, linebacker Ron Simpkins broke Michigan's single-season record with 158 total tackles (113 solo and 45 assists) during the regular season. He also sacked opposing quarterbacks 10 times and recovered five fumbles in 1977.
