Almost Human

So what’s it about? An advanced robot takes an interest in learning about love and human emotions. She stalks a pretty girl, kills her and takes her face then accidentally comes to the rescue of Wang Sheng as he being robbed. Her robot code of conduct kicks in, saving him from his predicament. However, she then takes an interest in Wang Sheng’s life, kidnapping his girlfriend and posing as her as her obsession to discover the feeling of love takes over her programming. Is it worth watching? It starts off with an iRobot-vibe, the Will Smith movie from 2004, complete with the same Robot Code of Conduct, but then it quickly changes vibe into a semi-romantic thriller. Keep in mind, this is a budget web movie, but even though some of the effects and themes are quite well developed. There is some decent CGI and acting in this movie, including a standout performance by Yiwei Liu as the police inspector who is investigating the murders. Its unfortunate that the story is rushed in the last 30 minutes, a prime example of a movie that could have used another 15 minutes to tell the story properly. Also, the sci-fi themes aren’t really explored in this film. There is the occasional bright neon lights in the background, but there is no other awesome technology, other than this deadly female android, in this film. Still, for an Asian sci-fi film, there is some potential here. My recommendation is: Your Choice
